European hard tech, the last week. A quiet, deep-summer week on the big-cheque front — Tech.eu counted 45+ European deals worth ~€684M, but the headline money again went to software and fintech (Ingenico's €150M, Callosum's $100M AI-compute seed, Rillet's $100M). The deep-tech money that moved was smaller and spread thin across the whole physical stack: chips, sensors, biology, energy and infrastructure. Two of the week's biggest atoms-and-molecules rounds stayed off the linked list below because neither has a clean public careers page yet: Munich/Kiel's Oceanloop (up to €38.5M to scale land-based giant-grouper farming) and the UK's Certain Energy (£10M Series A for manganese flow batteries, freshly spun out of Ceres Power and rebranded from RFC Power). Here are the Series A and up — plus a couple of notable deep-tech seeds — from the past week, each with a live careers link. Figures as reported — verify on each company's site.
Stockholm, Sweden · pixelgen.com · 20 Aug · single-cell spatial proteomics
Pixelgen builds Molecular Pixelation, a DNA-based method that maps cell-surface proteins and their spatial relationships on single cells — work published in Nature Methods and aimed squarely at immunology and drug discovery. The $15.5M Series B funds commercial scale-up of its kits and software and deeper push into the US and pharma markets. Scaling a life-science tools company points to hiring across molecular biology and assay R&D, bioinformatics and computational biology, plus manufacturing/operations, product and commercial leadership (field application scientists, sales, marketing). → Careers
Linköping, Sweden · swegan.se · 20 Aug · GaN-on-SiC semiconductor epiwafers
SweGaN designs and manufactures gallium-nitride-on-silicon-carbide (GaN-on-SiC) epitaxial wafers — the high-performance material behind next-generation RF, power and defence electronics. The €12.1M ($14M) round, led by Thisbe AB and North Ventures, takes total funding to ~€35M and bankrolls a new high-capacity production facility and commercial expansion. Building a semiconductor fab is an engineering-and-operations hiring problem: epitaxy/process and equipment engineering, materials and device characterisation, quality and reliability, plus manufacturing, supply-chain and commercial leadership. → Careers
Tübingen, Germany · computomics.com · 18 Aug · AI-powered climate-smart plant breeding
A Max-Planck / University of Tübingen spin-out, Computomics applies machine learning and genomics to predict how crop varieties will perform under heat and drought — its xSeedScore platform already cut barley breeding time for AB InBev from 12 years to 5. The €6.3M Series B, led by Convent Capital's Agri Food Fund, scales commercial deployment as European droughts sharpen demand. Expect hiring across computational biology and ML, genomics/data science, plus agronomy partnerships and commercial roles. → Careers
Plymouth, UK · oshendata.com · 21 Aug · autonomous ocean-sensing robot swarms
Founded by Imperial engineers in 2022, Oshen builds C-Star constellations — small, one-person-launchable wind- and solar-powered robots that sail for months and feed persistent, wide-area ocean intelligence to navies, weather agencies and ocean scientists (customers include the Royal Navy, US Navy METOC, NOAA and the Met Office). The raise triples manufacturing rate; headcount has already gone from 7 to nearly 30. Scaling a robotics manufacturer points to hiring across field robotics, autonomy/embedded software, mechanical and manufacturing/production engineering, plus programme and defence-commercial leadership. → Careers
Bergen / Oslo, Norway · birdsview.ai · 21 Aug · “MRI for concrete” non-destructive inspection
Birdsview combines sensors and proprietary algorithms to see inside concrete without drilling, producing 3D models that flag corrosion and defects before infrastructure fails — already used by Vinci, Bouygues, Sweco and Rambøll across eight countries. The €3.7M round funds commercial, industrial and international scaling from a ~14-person base. Expect hiring across hardware/sensor engineering, signal processing and ML, field/application engineering, plus sales and country-launch leadership. → Careers
Reykjavík, Iceland · snerpapower.com · 20 Aug · energy management for power-intensive industry
SnerpaPower's energy-management system helps aluminium and metals producers, data centres and power-to-X plants automate electricity consumption, scheduling and grid-flexibility decisions using live data and algorithms. The €3.4M (a €3M seed led by Encevo plus a Vöxtur grant) funds European expansion. Scaling a deep-tech energy platform into industrial sites points to hiring across data/optimisation engineering, energy-systems and power-market specialists, plus deployment, customer-success and commercial leadership. → Careers
Edinburgh, UK · singularphotonics.com · 19 Aug · single-photon (SPAD) image sensors
A fabless semiconductor spin-out of the University of Edinburgh's CMOS Sensors group, Singular Photonics builds SPAD-based image sensors for ultra-sensitive 4D imaging — LiDAR, medical and scientific detection with on-chip processing. The $2.15M funds development of its next-generation sensors. A fabless chip startup at this stage hires across sensor/ASIC and mixed-signal design, device physics and characterisation, firmware/systems, plus early commercial and operations leadership. → Careers
No single mega-round this week — instead, deep-tech capital fanned out across the entire physical stack. Two Swedish semiconductor plays (SweGaN's GaN-on-SiC wafers, Singular Photonics' single-photon sensors) sit alongside molecular biology (Pixelgen), climate-resilient agriculture (Computomics), autonomous ocean robotics (Oshen), infrastructure sensing (Birdsview) and industrial energy software (SnerpaPower). The cheques are smaller than July's, but the shape is familiar: most of these are past the lab and into scale-up — new fabs, higher manufacturing rates, more countries, more deployments. The recurring HardTech Careers pattern holds even in a thin week: a fresh European deep-tech round is usually a signal that the binding constraint is about to shift from R&D to manufacturing, deployment and commercial leadership — which is exactly where the senior hiring lands.
