Digest · 28 August 2026
European hard tech, the last week. The deep-summer lull broke a little: this week the money leaned into the “AI-meets-atoms” layer — automated wet labs, industrial fermentation, quantum simulation, photonic interconnect and space sensing. The biggest atoms-and-molecules cheque was Lausanne’s Adaptyv Bio ($40M / €34.35M Series A for its AI-native protein lab). Robotics kept its run going too: Montpellier’s Lupin Dental closed a €15M Series A for supervised dental robotics and Brussels’ Motion raised a €1.7M pre-seed for “humanoids-as-a-service” — both left off the linked list below because neither has a clean public careers page yet, as is the UK’s Certain Energy (£10M Series A for manganese flow batteries) and Eindhoven’s VitalFluid (€17.2M for plasma-activated-water crop protection, hiring via recruiters only). Spain’s PLD Space also banked a €158.9M ESA award — a contract, not a raise. Here are the Series A and up — plus a couple of notable deep-tech seeds — from the past week that each have a live careers link. Figures as reported — verify on each company’s site.
Lausanne, Switzerland · adaptyvbio.com · 27 Aug · AI-native automated protein lab
Adaptyv builds an automated, AI-native wet lab that takes a digital protein sequence and returns real experimental data — DNA synthesised in-house, proteins expressed cell-free, binding measured by SPR, with customers (and even AI agents) submitting designs via web or API. The round, led by Highland Europe with Ace Ventures, byFounders and Y Combinator doubling down, funds a roughly tripling of lab capacity, a new London lab and office in Q4 2026, and a push into harder biology (developability, peptides, ADCs, degraders). The team grows from ~25 to ~60. Scaling a “biological gigafactory” points to hiring across lab automation and robotics engineering, molecular biology and protein science, software/platform and API, plus manufacturing/operations and commercial leadership. → Careers
Brussels (Anderlecht), Belgium · maashcompany.com · 25 Aug · industrial mycoprotein fermentation
Built on 30 years of industrial fermentation expertise, MAASH produces LoCylia®, a fungi-based mycoprotein ingredient sold to B2B food formulators as a naturally textured, lower-footprint protein for meat blends. The €12.15M (equity plus public financing from five new investors) funds the jump to industrial scale — the company has acquired a fermentation facility (the former Metex NOOVISTA site in Saint-Avold, France) to lift output. Scaling submerged fermentation into industrial production points to hiring across bioprocess and fermentation engineering, food science and R&D, plant and manufacturing operations, quality and regulatory, plus B2B commercial leadership. → Careers
Paris, France · colibritd.com · 27 Aug · quantum simulation software
ColibriTD develops hardware-agnostic quantum software for industrial simulation — its H-DES (Hybrid Differential Equation Solver) tackles the partial differential equations behind fluid dynamics, material deformation, electromagnetics and financial risk, across aerospace, defence, semiconductors, energy, automotive and finance. The €4M seed, led by Earlybird with SymbiaVC and Medin VC, funds further R&D on H-DES, recruitment of quantum researchers and engineers, and international growth. A quantum-software scale-up at this stage hires across quantum-algorithm R&D, software engineering, applied physics and simulation, plus business-development and commercial leadership. → Careers
Göteborg, Sweden · solinide.com · 20 Aug · silicon-nitride photonic chips for AI data centres
A Chalmers University spin-out, Solinide builds silicon-nitride photonic integrated circuits and integrated frequency combs — its packaged O-band micro-comb system moves large volumes of data between chips with low power, aimed at the co-packaged optics that AI data centres increasingly need. The €4M seed, co-led by Navigare Ventures and PSV Hafnium with Chalmers Ventures, Turbine Capital, Norrsken Evolve and Almi Greentech, funds commercialisation, scalable European manufacturing and team expansion. A fabless photonics startup scaling into production hires across photonics/PIC design, packaging and test, process and manufacturing engineering, plus product and commercial leadership. → Careers
Gloucestershire, UK · spaceam.co.uk · Aug · AI remote-sensing & ultralight probes for space & defence
SpaceAM (Space Autonomous Machines) designs AI-driven remote-sensing and ultra-lightweight structures — its LEVL mono-wing flight system and Venus LEVL probes grew out of the MIT/Breakthrough “Venus Life Finder” study, and it now applies biomimetic, mass-critical engineering to space and defence sensing. Its seed round funds scaling of that work from an on-site Gloucestershire base (British-citizen roles only, no remote). The careers page is already live with mechanical and electronic engineering openings; expect further hiring across aerospace/mechanical engineering, electronics and PCB integration, embedded and AI sensing, plus programme leadership. → Careers
No mega-round this week, but a clear centre of gravity: capital went to the layer where AI meets physical reality — an automated wet lab (Adaptyv), industrial fermentation (MAASH), quantum simulation (ColibriTD), photonic interconnect for AI data centres (Solinide) and space/defence sensing (SpaceAM) — alongside a fresh wave of robotics (Lupin Dental’s €15M dental-robotics Series A, Motion’s humanoids) and grid-scale energy (Certain Energy). Most of these companies are past the lab and into scale-up: new facilities, tripled capacity, industrial production, more countries. The recurring HardTech Careers pattern holds — a fresh European deep-tech round is usually the signal that the binding constraint is about to shift from R&D to manufacturing, deployment and commercial leadership, which is exactly where the senior hiring lands.
