European hard tech, back after the summer. We skipped a few weeks, so this is a catch-up on the deep-tech money that landed across Europe in September — and it leaned hard into sovereignty in orbit. The two biggest cheques both went to space: Franco-German The Exploration Company banked a €387M ($450M) Series C — the largest ever raised by a European space company — for its Nyx reusable capsule and Storm engine, and the UK’s Open Cosmos hit unicorn status with a €300M ($346M) Series C to scale satellite mass-manufacturing. Around them, capital kept flowing into the “AI-meets-atoms” layer: nanoimprint tooling for AI glasses (Morphotonics), photonic-chip packaging (Lightspring), laser beam-steering for drone defence (INLEAP) and jam-proof battlefield comms (Terasi), plus more launch (HyImpulse). A few notable rounds are left off the linked list below for want of a clean public careers page — Munich’s Arcos (€5.5M seed for critical-infrastructure protection) and Spain’s PLD Space (which extended its Series C to €288M) among them. The Exploration Company (TEC) is building Nyx, a reusable capsule designed to carry cargo — and eventually crew — to space stations and return it safely to Earth, plus Storm, Europe’s first reusable high-thrust full-flow staged-combustion rocket engine. The round, co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners, Atomico and EQT’s Scaleup Europe Fund with existing European backers, funds a Nyx docking mission to the ISS and accelerates Storm toward a future reusable heavy launcher. A capital raise of this size on hardware this ambitious points to sustained senior hiring across propulsion and mechanical engineering, manufacturing and industrialisation, mission operations, avionics and software, plus programme delivery and commercial leadership. → Careers

Open Cosmos designs and mass-manufactures small satellites — it says it builds roughly one a day across European factories — and runs the OpenConstellation, ConnectedCosmos and DataCosmos services that turn them into real-time intelligence and connectivity for governments. The €300M round, led by Lightrock with ETF Partners, Institut Català de Finances, Entrepreneurs First and international pension funds, tips the company into unicorn territory and funds around-the-clock production and constellation build-out. HyImpulse builds low-cost launchers on paraffin/LOX hybrid propulsion — the suborbital SR75 and the three-stage orbital SL1, designed to carry up to 600kg to low Earth orbit. The €50M+ equity extension, co-led by JOIN Capital and Ace Capital Partners with North Ventures, BW-Capital, Bayern Kapital and DLR, funds commercialisation of SR75 (a further launch from SaxaVord in Scotland is planned for late 2026), SL1’s first flight and production scale-up, against an order book the company puts north of €350M. Founded by former Philips engineers, Morphotonics builds large-area nanoimprint lithography machines that stamp micro- and nanoscale patterns into resin across big panels — the tooling that makes the waveguides inside AI glasses and AR headsets manufacturable at volume. The €40M+ round saw 3M Ventures, Innovation Industries and BOM increase their stakes with new backer Invest-NL, the EIC Fund and the EIB, after revenue reportedly tripled between 2024 and 2025. INLEAP Photonics, a German spin-out, develops ultra-fast, highly precise laser beam-steering systems — used both to raise throughput in industrial laser manufacturing and to enable laser-based counter-drone defence. The roughly €20M seed funds product development and a scale-up of its beam-steering platform across industrial and defence markets. A KTH Royal Institute of Technology spin-out, Terasi builds pocket-sized components and packaging that create secure, gigabit-speed wireless links at high frequency without fibre or towers — hard to intercept or jam, and aimed at defence, satellite and telecoms use in contested environments. The €11M seed, co-led by the NATO Innovation Fund and Join Capital with In-Q-Tel, D3 and returning investors, funds scaling to European armed forces, team growth and new products. A FEMTO-ST spin-out, Lightspring uses 3D lithography (two-photon polymerisation) to fabricate optical coupling structures — microlenses, 3D waveguides, beam-shapers — directly onto photonic chips, turning optical packaging (roughly half a photonic chip’s cost today) into a single reproducible manufacturing step. The €3.1M seed led by Atlantic and OVNI Capital, plus grants taking the total past €3.5M, funds its process design kit and design tools, co-design programmes with industrial partners, and qualification for production as the team grows toward 12. If August’s money chased AI-meets-atoms, September’s headline was sovereignty in orbit: the two largest European deep-tech cheques of the month both went to space — The Exploration Company’s record €387M for reusable transport and propulsion, and Open Cosmos’ €300M to mass-produce satellites and the intelligence layer on top — with HyImpulse’s launch extension close behind. Underneath the rockets, the same physical-AI supply chain kept raising: the tooling for AI glasses (Morphotonics), the packaging that makes photonic chips manufacturable (Lightspring), laser hardware for drone defence (INLEAP) and jam-proof comms for contested environments (Terasi). Nearly all of it is scale-up capital — new factories, around-the-clock production, first commercial flights, qualification for volume. The recurring HardTech Careers pattern holds: a fresh European deep-tech round is usually the signal that the binding constraint is shifting from R&D to manufacturing, deployment and commercial leadership — which is exactly where the senior hiring lands.
