Deep tech describes companies whose core advantage comes from research — a breakthrough in physics, biology, materials science, or engineering that competitors can't copy with a better UI or a bigger marketing budget. The defensibility lives in the science itself. Deep tech includes hardware companies, but also software-led fields: AI research labs, computational drug discovery, quantum algorithms, synthetic-biology platforms.
The term matters commercially because deep tech follows a different playbook: longer R&D cycles, patient capital, technical founders, and milestones measured in demonstrated physics rather than monthly active users. Europe attracted roughly €15 billion in deep tech investment in 2024, and deep tech now accounts for close to a third of all European venture capital.
Hard tech (also written hardtech) is deep tech that must be manufactured. If the breakthrough only creates value once it exists as a physical object — a photonic chip, a lead-cooled reactor, a launch vehicle, an autonomous drone, a surgical robot — it's hard tech. That adds an entire layer of difficulty on top of the science: process engineering, yield, supply chains, certification, export controls, factories.

Hard tech leadership demands a profile that pure software careers rarely build: NPI and manufacturing scale-up, hardware supply chains, systems engineering across disciplines, regulatory and export-control regimes (ITAR/EAR, dual-use), and capital-intensive roadmap planning. Leaders who combine deep technical fluency with commercial scale-up experience are the single scarcest resource in European deep tech — which is precisely why senior hard-tech roles command premium compensation and why funded companies fight for them.

Is every hard tech company a deep tech company?
Essentially yes — hard tech is deep tech that ships as hardware. The reverse doesn't hold: an AI lab is deep tech but not hard tech.
Is AI deep tech?
Frontier AI research qualifies; an app calling an API does not. When AI runs on custom silicon or inside a robot, it crosses into hard tech.
Which term should I use?
Investors and policymakers say "deep tech" (the broader market); operators and engineers increasingly say "hard tech" when they mean atoms, not bits. We use hard tech because the hardware distinction is what shapes hiring.
